Feral is Not an Exoctic Breed of Cat

Friends of Felines is an all-volunteer, not-for-profit network of dedicated individuals who feel that to trap, spay and/or neuter, and return (T-N-R) feral cats to their "home" (colony) rather than euthanasia is the right thing to do. We work to improve the lives of feral and stray cat colonies in south central Kansas.

Friends of Felines has trapped, neutered/spayed, and returned or relocated hundreds of cats.

Friends of Felines is currently supporting five colonies and 128 cats. Through the efforts of volunteers, these cats are provided shelter and food within their colonies, and the necessary medical attention to lead a full life in a safe environment. FOF purchases thousands of pounds of dry and canned cat food every year. With our help they are given the chance to lead a full life in a safe environment.

FOF Philosophy on How to Treat Your Pets

  • My life is likely to last 10-15 years. Any separation from you is likely to be painful.
  • Give me time to understand what you want of me.
  • Place your trust in me. It is crucial for my well-being.
  • Don't be angry with me for long and don't lock me up as punishment. You have your work, your friends, your entertainment, but I have only you.
  • Talk to me. Even if I don't understand your words, I do understand your voice when speaking to me.
  • Be aware that however you treat me, I will never forget it.
  • Before you hit me, before you strike me, remember that I could hurt you, and yet, I choose not to bite you.
  • Before you scold me for being lazy or uncooperative, ask yourself if something might be bothering me. Perhaps I'm not getting the right food, I have been in the sun too long, or my heart might be getting old or weak.
  • Please take care of me when I grow old. You too, will grow old.
  • On the ultimate difficult journey, go with me please. Never say you can't bear to watch. Don't make me face this alone. Everything is easier for me if you are there, because I love you so. ALWAYS!

Trap, Neuter/Spay and Return -- The only humane, proved, and successful method of feral/stray population control.

The costs associated with trapping and euthanasia of feral/stray cats are prohibitive to local governmental agencies. Because of their undomesticated nature, most ferals are not considered adoptable and are routinely destroyed in city and county animal shelters. Killing feral cats is inhumane as well as costly and does not solve the problem. The method of trapping, neutering/spaying, and returning/relocating (TNR) has been accepted and endorsed by municipal agencies, animal welfare organizations and the Humane Society, as the only successful proved way to solve the problem of feral/stray cat overpopulation.

Interested in getting involved? Friends of Felines meets as a group every third Sunday, 6:00 p.m. at Kater Supply, 418 N. Washington in Sedgwick, Kansas.
