October 16 is "National Feral Cat Day."

To commemorate this day, Friends of Felines is issuing a challenge to each of you -- we challenge you to pledge to have a feral cat spayed or neutered. If you don’t have a colony that you care for, or if all the cats in your colony are already fixed, you can still help. Contact your local feral cat organization, or contact us. We will take your pledge, and then let you know what caregiver or colony that you helped. If we all work together, we can make a difference in the feral cat population. And, while you're at it, spread the word about TNR. Education is a powerful tool for change.

Friends of Felines member Shirley Hutchison recently had a bit of "kitty" excitement. Shirley recently trapped three ferals, one of which was pregnant. So pregnant that one of the kittens was born on the way to the vet! Unfortunately, the others didn't make it. As luck would have it, a clinic vet tech had a "foster" Mama at her home, so she took the little one home, rubbed it on the foster Mama, who accepted it. The "surprise package" grew, was neutered, and has been adopted! The Mama cat was also altered and returned to her colony healthy. Shirley said, "I feel totally rewarded this time. It was a happy ending." Great job, Shirley! Thank you for all you do!

Friends of Felines/Alley Cat Allies Make Presentations to Local Groups

Alley Cat Allies and Friends of Felines recently presented two workshops on "Helping Outdoor Cats" to the citizens and local government officials in McPherson and Wichita, Kansas. These workshops provided information on how local governments, veterinarians, and residents can work together to implement non-lethal, compassionate, and sensible solutions to reduce the number of outdoor cats while improving the cats' lives. A special thank-you to Pioneer Balloon in Wichita for the use of their facility, which made it possible for us to accommodate a 100+ crowd.

After the McPherson workshop, Alley Cat Allies presented Ray Huff, FOF president and founder, with a certificate of recognition for his work with the T-N-R program and assisting others with T-N-R. Great job, Ray!

Friends of Felines offers public presentations regarding T-N-R and other feral cat issues free of charge to groups, animal control officers, city councils, etc. If your group is interested, contact us at info@felinefriendsks.com.
